Skincare Year In Review, Part 2: Products, Tools and Final Thoughts

2019 was the year that I started looking at the skincare industry with a more critical eye. In terms of what we consume through Instagram, Youtube, Facebook and even Reddit, I started to notice a lot of influencers pushing products. I felt the product reviews I watched and read may have been sponsored by the brands and might not have had the best intentions towards its users.

When I started writing my skincare blog in 2018, I had the goal of giving real reviews and bringing authenticity to what I wrote about within the industry. I know I am not the only skincare blogger with this mission. I applaud the outpour of authentic accounts and blogs I follow that really want to help other people with their experience and knowledge of skincare.

I also started taking my app more seriously. Just a refresher, I had this idea brewing in my head for a while. I noticed the great lengths my friends and family would go through to find something that would give them a solution for their skincare problem. Insta, YouTube, Google or a derm were the usual routes. However, this is can be very time consuming, overwhelming and the advice you get might actually not work for you (since we are all so different). So I thought, there has to be a better way!

The app is a simple idea. Essentially you will be able to look up skincare advice by filtering profiles of other people, so that it best matches your concerns and you can see what these people are using/have tried and tested. I have been talking with a lot of skincare bloggers and experts about this idea and have been taking the feedback seriously. I want to make this something easy to use and most importantly, something that is actually helpful when looking up advice. Skincare doesn’t have to be a daunting process and I just think that there has to be a better way to get help. Filtering through all the noise by narrowing it down to people that share common characteristics with you could help. Stay tuned for more updates! Looking towards 2020:

-continue gathering research on important things to consider for the app

-I want to continue to invest in new products and tools mainly;

-want to get more into retinoids and essences

-try more products from both established brands and new up and coming ones but keep a critical lens on what I read/consume

-try one of those companies that offer bespoke skincare routines

-be more conscious of sustainable brands and ingredients

-buy a skincare mini fridge

-look into more natural methods to reduce wrinkles/aging,

-research what skincare experts are recommending and why

-trying out a Korean skincare routine

I wish everyone a joyous, radiant and prosperous New Year. 2020 is going to be an amazing year!! See you in the next decade friends.
